SaveTheFood

Save The Food was a major initiative by SapientNitro in 2014 aimed at educating people about food waste. I was responsible for creating the animated homepage and several other sections, managing the 'guestimator' feature, and handling the infrastructure management.

Project Background

Save The Food was a project brought to us by the Ad-Council of that quickly turned into a passion project for us at Sapient. Save The Food attempted to bring a design-focused, friendlier approach to educating people about food waste without a focus on shame. Discussing ones own contributions to food waste can feel like an inherently negative conversation, and as a result people tend to shy away from discussing their own habits. The goal of this campaign was to try change that.

Homepage

My team's focus was on creating a central web hub for all other media buys to point back to. For the initial version, I was tasked with creating the animated homepage (that now lives here):

Water Waste

Waste Breakdown

Additional Pages

I was also responsible for the Cook It, Store It, Tips and Share It sections. I also served as the tech lead on the Guestimator feature:

Stack

The site was originally built on top of keystone-cms and used express and PM2 to serve the handlebar based markup and styles built with SASS. As well as being a primary engineer for the building of the project I also handled the management of our infrastructure on Digital Ocean.

Impact

Header Header Header

To this day it remains one of my favorite projects of my career because it attempted to tackle and bring awareness to food waste, an issue I have discussed before with my project Savory and would continue to work on after with Food-ID.
